The institute was established in 1972 as Kimathi Institute of Technology and opened its doors to the first batch of students in the year 1978.The college was renamed to Kimathi University College of Technology in 2007 after it was upgraded to university. It was later awarded a charter to operate fully as a university in 2012 and became Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUT).In addition to the main Nyeri campus, DKUT also has a campus in Nairobi CBD located at Pension Towers, Loita Street.
