Topic: Linear Equations

Lesson Summary

Three artisans and two craftsmen earn sh. 220 in a day while four artisans and one craftsman earn sh. 185. Find the amount of money a craftsman earns in a day.

Text Answer

Let the artisan earn x and craftsman y

3𝑥+2𝑦=220….(1)

4𝑥+𝑦 =185…(2)

Solve by elimination method.
We multiply equation (2) by 2 to eliminate y
i.e 3𝑥+2𝑦=220
(4𝑥+𝑦 =185)×2

3𝑥+2𝑦=220
- 8𝑥+2𝑦 =370
-5x=-150

-5x-5=-150-5

=30

Substitute the value of x in equation to get the value of y.
4(30)+𝑦 =185
120+𝑦=185 y = 185-120 = 65

Each artisan earns 30/=
Each craftsman earns 65/=
