1. Arrive at the exam venue fifteen or thirty minutes early: This enables the students to refresh and collect any other materials they may need for the exam in order to avoid rush when the question papers have been given.Getting the materials redy is of importance as the students will know those that are not in good condition and adjust them or borrow in advance, for example, one needs to confirm that his or her pens or pencils are writing, the calculators for instance are in good condition,so as to avoid frustrations that will lead to poor performance.2. Proper reading of questionsA large number of students do not answer the questions set by the examiner, not that they do not have the answers with them but they fail to read the questions properly. They normally answer what they think the examiner wants not what the examiner is asking for.For instance, the teacher or lecturer may set a question;Describe the use of accounting ratios in assessing the business performance. Many students will fall on the trap and start describing how to calculate the various accounting ratios. At the end they will not be awarded any mark, because the question demanded the use of accounting ratios and not how to calculate them. Many other students will put emphasis on the word use, they will then write their answers based on comparing this year's accounting ratios in a business with those of last year. Therefore the students should read the questions carefully underlining the key words in order to get the meaning of the question.3. Good time management:It is very essential to use time well in order to gain the highest marks. When the students manage and plan well for the time given ,they can complete answering their questions and remain with the extra time to make corrections in the questions they may have messed with during answering.Strategies to manage time wella. Read the rubric or instructions carefully;this enables one to know the questions to answer and the demands of a question. It also enables one to avoid time in answering many unnecessary questions which will not be marked, here the students normally answer extra questions when they are simple. At the end they waste time on the work that is not required.b. Start each answer on a new page.c. tackle the easiest question first as you will collect more marks then come to difficult ones later as you will remain with more time for any adjustments.First get the marks you are sure of.4. Be honest and courageous:Never be afraid of others opening the question papers faster than you, this is because many may not be knowing or having any content for the questions appearing thus they keep on surveying the paper at least to get the simple questions they can answer.Do not also try to copy from others thinking that they have answers for the questions, they may have understood the question or questions in a different manner, and in the process give wrong answers.Just believe in yourself and try to be honest.By JANET MAENYA STUDENTMURANG'A UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY.
