COURSE OUTLINE

Purpose of the course:

To provide a thorough understanding of the principles underlying crop production, management, and for continued learning in agronomy.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course are as listed below:
The specific objectives of this course are to;
i).Understanding of the physical, biological, and economic factors influencing the choice of crop
ii).Demonstrate insight in important interactions between plants and their physical environment that are essential for plant functioning, plant productivity and survival
iii).Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of crop growth and development and the influence of management on the components of yield
iv).Assess crop health and growth and utilize the observations made towards constructing management strategies
v).Synthesize and critically appraise management strategies to optimise yield and quality in crop production with due regard to market constraints and the environment

1)Concept of crop production, energy/biomes transfer systems.
2).Environmental factors determining crop performance.
3).Cultural practices
4).Cultivation and seedbed preparation,
5).Nursery establishment and maintenance
6).Plant seed and seed rate,
7).Plant population
8).Crop protection,
9).Maintenance of soil fertility, organic and inorganic fertilizers,
10).soil and water conservation
11).Cropping systems including crop rotation, inter-cropping and Agro-forestry.
