Adulthood spans the period from age 18 to about 65. This stage of life can be divided into two- early and middle adulthood. Early adulthood includes the years 18 to 30, and middle adulthood 30 to 65 years. With the cessation of physical growth in early adulthood, nutritional needs decrease to a maintenance level-just the amount needed to maintain and repair body tissue. These needs remain constant throughout adulthood except for calories and iron in women who might need them in bigger amounts in special cases like pregnancy, loss of blood through menstruation and during childbirth. Naturally, these requirements may reduce with the onset of menopause. During the later stage, a number of nutritional or health problems can surface.

Obesity, hypertension and arteriosclerosis are serious health problems that are especially prevalent. So are other problems commonly related to bad eating habits that many of us have acquired. For example, over-eating could easily lead to obesity while a high consumption of fatty foods could lead to arteriosclerosis-a heart disease caused by hardening of arteries due to blockage by fat deposits. Without a proper diet, your body can't function properly and you become more susceptible to chronic illnesses or diseases and even premature death.

There are few things to consider for proper body function: Go for variety, the best way to get energy, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fibre you need for good health is to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods. Go green, choose a diet with plenty of grain products, vegetables and fruits as they provide essential vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and fibre. These foods are generally low in fat. Go easy on fat, choose a diet low in saturated or hard fat cholesterol. A high-fat and cholesterol diet will definitely have serious health implications.

To reduce your risk of getting heart disease and certain types of cancer, reduce your consumption

of high-fat and high-cholesterol foods. Take less sugar and salt, you should also choose a diet moderate in sugars. Although sugars and sweetened foods supply calories, they are limited in vitamins and minerals. A diet moderate in salt and sodium is important in reducing your chances of developing high blood pressure.

If you have high blood pressure, limiting your salt intake will help you control the condition. One for the road, if you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation. Alcoholic drinks are not nutritious and drinking them is associated with many health problems. Did you know that heavy drinkers are often malnourished. N/B Balance the food you eat with physical activity/exercise.
