Many students tend to think that memorizing materials prior to a test is a waste of time. This is because they tend to think that you will forget what you memorized as soon as the test is over. Moreover, teachers have also been known to strongly discourage memorization and advocate for understanding instead.

Memorization and understanding however are not mutually exclusive. Rather, memorization can be used as an important element that can be used to aid understanding even in situations where complicated materials are involved. Generally speaking, memorization and understanding reinforce each other. How, you may ask. This is because memorizing requires that you organize and repeatedly test yourself on the material to be learned. In so doing, you are going to be enlarging your comprehension of the materials in question and realize some relationships that you had not noted before.

As a student therefore, it is important that you learn the art of, not just understanding but memorization as well. To be able to memorize materials effectively, you need to take the following steps;

1. Organize the materials to be learned.

2. Intend to remember. Set your mind to it. Remind yourself that what you are memorizing is crucial in attaining good grades.

3. Test yourself repeatedly on the material to be memorized.

4. Use several memory techniques such as use of keywords and use of catchphrases.

5. Space memory work over several sessions. If you try to memorize a lot of materials at the same time, you might have trouble absorbing the materials.

6. Use as a study period the time before going to bed. Your mind will work and absorb much of this material during the night. A morning review is also important as it will complete the process of solidly fixing the material in your memory.
