Passing in examinations often involves a deep understanding of the subject matter prior taking examinations. Students who consistently cram for examinations therefore are not likely to be successful in their studies. Sometimes however, cramming may be necessitated by a few reasons such as improper time management or an encounter with problems that disrupt one’s study routine. If you find yourself in such a situation and you have no other choice but to cram, it is important that you learn how to do it right. The following steps can help you to make use of limited time by way of cramming. Note however that cramming can only be used as a last resort.1. Accept the fact that, given the limited time that you have, it will not be possible to cover everything that you did in class or everything in a textbook. This is the first step towards effective cramming. Engaging in self-blames will only end up wasting more of your time.2. Read through your class notes and your textbooks and mark off those ideas that are most important. Important ideas often include definitions, lists of items, points marked by emphasis words and answers to basic questions made out of titles and headings.3. Write the ideas you have selected on sheets of paper using one side of a page only for easy retrieval. 4. Prepare catchwords or catchphrases to recall the materials you are studying and then memorize the points using the method of repeated self-testing. 5. If there is still time, go back and review all your notes. Do not use this time to learn new concepts. Instead, try to broaden your understanding of the points you have already studied.
