The chief justice is the head of the judiciary,he is the most senior of the judges of the court of appeal and the high court, he is appointed by the president and he chairs the judicial service commission,for him to have the position,then he must be qualified in law.

What are his functions?

The chief justice is the head of the judiciary that is,the represents the judiciary in all state matters that is consultations with the executive and the legislature.

He swears in the president and other senior members of the government on the oath of office.

He is the chair person of the judicial service commission which advises the president on the appointment of the judges on the court of appeal and high court.

He makes rules or procedures to be followed in the hearing of election partition both parliamentary and civic.He appoints judges to be members of the rules committee which draws the procedure to be followed in almost all cases that go before all the courts in the country.

He is the main defender of the constitution of the land.

He supervises administratively the subordinate courts namely,the magistrates courts.

He hears or makes decisions on the cases and appeals in the high court and court of appeal like any of the other judges.

He swears in the newly qualified advocates as the advocates of the high court.
