Denial is the act of refusing to accept the reality, theory, doctrine or request. It is a defense mechanism theory discovered by Freud Sigmund, the founder of psychoanalysis. The victims employs this mechanism with the primary aim of protecting themselves from negative character such as accepting their guilty of both actions and thoughts. In this way, they try to avoid emotional and psychological state.

In this article, details examples of those people trying to use denial in order to avoid reality and cope up with unaccepted behavior. According to Freud Sigmund, there are there motivating forces that is id, ego and superego. They influence human behavior in different ways. Id drives human beings towards satisfaction of his or her needs without rational thinking.

With the ego, rational thinking and facts of reality are taken into consideration. Ego tries to seek best alternative among many available in the process of satisfying the desires of id. Here, the advantages and disadvantages of various alternatives are analyzed before taking any action. The superego consists of high moral stands. It is the basis under which conscience is applied.

There are various situations where human beings apply denial to avoid grief and emotional shock. For example a wife receives a message about the death of her husband. Although this is real, she may choose to deny the death of her husband. This is so to prevent her from exaggerated body emotions such as fainting and going mud.

In this situation of death, the three motive forces (id, ego and superego) set a conflict between themselves since they have different goals and desires. The presence of ego controls the anxiety and motions of the body caused by id and superego. Ego uses defense mechanism in controlling the two.

Internal denial may takes place within the thoughts of a person. Here, a

person applies defense mechanism to prevent certain inner feelings and thoughts. Take an example of a lecturer of philosophy, teaching students the essence of critical and creative thinking in attempt to differentiate emotions and external conflicts. All of sudden, the lecture may differ with students on a certain facts, the lecturer being annoyed, may avoid showing emotions by denying the fact.

In life, people find fake reasons as to they had failed in the past. They also appreciate their success on the other side not acknowledging failure. Some take failure was caused by other external factors not themselves for example leaders find reasons as to why they did not drive their country to greater heights on their leadership period. They may claim that failure was as a result of natural calamity which is not under their control.

A person may use denial in three different ways; minimization, simple denial and projection. Simple denial is the act of denying ugly and unpleasant facts which forms the basis of reality. Minimization is a situation where a person accepts the fact but underrate its reality. Projection on the other side is the act of accepting the reality but transfer its responsibilities or consequences to another person.
