Floods is one of the natural calamity in Kenya that has caused lots of damages to our crops and properties and even taking lives of both animals and human beings. The reason why this is happening is because of unpreparedness to curb this calamity. It is very shameful that Kenya is still experiencing food insecurity while floods are causing havoc, this really shows how undeveloped we are because this water could be harvested and used for irrigation during the dry season, and also the government should be well prepared to prevent any misfortune caused by floods. To me the heavy rains should not be seen as a treat to our lives and property because if the flood water is harvested or drained properly it can be more of advantage than disadvantage. The few advantages are:(i) Irrigation- flood water from heavy rain can be harvested in a dam or tank for use during the dry spell. (ii) Fish farming- this water can be used in a fish pond to rear fish which can be a source of income, food and employment. (iii) Hydro-power- floods can be used to generate electricity and this can boost our economy and lower the rates of electricity bill. (iv) Domestic use- instead of the rains pouring to waste and gathering to cause floods which can be dangerous it is better to construct/install large tanks that can collect roof water then it can be used for domestic purpose e.g cooking, washing, for drinking by both human and animals among other uses.
