The introduction of advanced information technology in Kenya, especially the internet, has led to improvement and easement of the lives of many Kenyans, catapulted by telecom industries. Moreover the existence of free Wi-Fi hotspots, the proliferation of cheap computers and 3G phones including the famous china models, has extensively increased the number of those accessing the internet. It was estimated in 2009 December that 84.5% Kenyans had access to mobile phone including 2 million internet subscribers, that translates to a much higher figure today. This figure is expected to rise higher as the uptake of the broadband on the fibre network across the country spreads faster. Whats more interesting is that all popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, You tube,Wikipedia and others have mobile versions of their services. It's thus common to find people busy chatting, tweeting ,reading the newspaper and more from the comfort of their mobile phones. IT has also evolved as a helpline for students and researchers on how to mine relevant information. All in all , there's a good proportion of Kenyans who are illiterate therefore internet providers should invest in and provide software that are in local language. More so, internet accessibility in rural areas could play a major role in reducing information poverty and hence poverty. There`s hope in our new constitution to help curb the gap between rural non-digitisation and urban digitisation.
