Cutting down of trees is known as deforestation. The consequences of this action have been vocalized in every platform in each corner of the world. Yet there are still people carrying out this activity. These are some of the disadvantages of cutting down trees.

First and foremost, the immediate effect and noticeable change that is observed when trees are cut down is the loss of visual attractiveness of the land. All that is left are stumps that are not pleasing to the eye. The green overview of the area is lost and the place loses its beauty. All that is left is a sight that should not be beheld.

Secondly, when trees are cut down, the soil is left bare. The remaining part of the tree dries up and the roots no longer hold the soil together. This leaves the soil exposed and in danger of being eroded by the agents of soil erosion i.e. water, wind, animals. This will lead to soil erosion and washing away of the top layer of soil. From the many types of soil erosion the land will lose its fertility and not be able to give life to any green life. The landscape of the land will also be affected when gully erosion takes place leaving large hollow gullies in the ground.

Another disadvantage of cutting down trees is the way the land will be left bare. The soil will not be able to sustain any green plants and will be a large mass of nothingness. Nothing will grow and this will lead to desertification. Trees are essential in the water cycle. They give out water by transpiring and this ultimately leads to the formation of rain. When the trees are cut down, the water cycle will be distorted and no rain will fall on the area.

The land be left dry and no plants will survive. Eventually the land will be a desert.

Moreover, when trees are cut down there is loss of biodiversity. This means an organism will be eliminated from the life in the area. When rare trees are cut down, they will not grow again. This is the loss of biodiversity.
There are animals that live in the trees. Desertification will mean loss of their homes. We have seen wild animals move to human settlements because their homes have been burnt or cut down. The animals are left homeless.
