A virus always creates an autorun.inf file which is a system, hidden, and a read only file on your flash drive. When the autorun.inf file is found, windows follows the instructions in the file to run a program and thus, when the user double clicks the USB drive, the virus files infect your system.
USB immunizer from BitDefender protects your flash drive from being infected by viruses in that it disables autorun-related threats before they access the computer. BitDefender USB immunizer works by placing a dummy autorun.inf file on the drive that cannot be deleted or overwritten unless by formatting the drive or accessing it from a non-windows system such as Linux. Since there can only be one autorun.inf file, the presence of the locked BitDefender autorun.inf effectively prevents any autorun viruses to be launched from the drive
To use this program
1. Go to USB immunizer website on labs.bitdefender.com/projects/usb-immunizer/overview
2. Click on Download
3. Install usb-immunizer
4. Insert your usb drive
5. Click on ‘Click on the red icons to immunize the corresponding devices’
6. Your flash drive is immunized
You can also automatically immunize other usb drives by clicking on the settings button and setting the “automatically immunize other usb drives” to “ON”
