A virus is a rogue software program that attaches itself to other software programs or data files in order to be executed, often causing hardware and software malfunctions usually without user knowledge or permission.

Most computer viruses deliver a "payload". The payload may be highly destructive destroying programs or data, clogging computer memory, or causing programs to run improperly.

One of the worst things that would happen is if one is unable to boot in windows, even while on safe mode. This sometimes makes it harder for people to fix the problem and end up formatting the drive to re-install windows.

In case of such a situation, such a move would be unnecessary because all one needs is a bootable rescue CD. A rescue CD contains its own operating system that can run directly from the CD without installing anything to your computer.

Kaspersky offers free rescue disk known as Kaspersky Rescue disk 10 to clean viruses without booting in windows and it is designed to scan, disinfect and restore infected operating systems.

In order to use this program:
1. Log on to go to http://support.kaspersky.com/8092 and download the .iso file. You can also download record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to USB devices utility to copy the .iso image on your flash drive and make it bootable.
2. Boot using the CD or USB.
3. Choose the Graphic Mode.
4. Accept the agreement by clicking the letter “a”
5. When the working environment appears, switch tabs over to the My Update Center then click the Start update

button to load the latest anti-virus definitions from their web site.
6. Once done, switch back over to the Objects Scan tab, select the drives you want to scan, and then click the Start Objects Scan button.
7. The scan will run, and clean up any viruses that it finds.
