Football is the most popular sport all over the world. It is an entertaining sport played and watched by many.It has hundreds of thousands players, millions of fans and billions of viewers.Football makes people who rarely talk to you, shout their lungs out while cheering for their favorite team.It is also a sport that has created a lot of employment opportunities all over the world. It is a sport that is liked and enjoyed by many people, young and old,men and women, short and tall.Personally,I am a die-hard football fan and I support my team through thick and thin, for better or worse. In our country Kenya, football is the most popular sport and it has a lot of fans.Fans throng stadiums in order to support their teams.Inside and outside the stadium, the fans support and praise their teams through songs.True fans even support their teams by contributing to their teams' kitties and also through membership fees. However, every coin has two sides. There are some factors that hinder the growth of this beautiful sport. One of these factors is hooliganism.Hooliganism is a situation whereby unruly and rowdy fans unleash violence.Hooliganism does more harm than good and has adversely affected the development of football in our country.Hooliganism is fast becoming the face of Kenyan football.Hooliganism is associated with ugly scenes of violence and destruction of properties.Sometimes, people get injured or even die after acts of hooliganism. But what mainly causes hooliganism?Hooliganism is mostly evident when a team is defeated and the fans find it a bitter pill to swallow. The fans of the defeated team cause violence, abuse fans and players of the other team, intimidate the referee and match officials and throw stones at vehicles and unsuspecting citizens.Such fans are not true fans but hooligans.True fans support their teams through thick and thin, for better or worse.True fans are peaceful and even concede defeat. They understand that being violent doesn't change the result and it harms and taints the reputation and image of their clubs.True fans also understand that in a match there can only be three results namely;win, draw, loss. They are prepared mentally for any of the above results. They believe in a healthy competition where the best team carries the day.No one rejoices in defeat but sportsmanship demands that you accept defeat and congratulate your opponent for winning. They understand that when their team is defeated, that is not the end of the world. It means that their team should go back to the drawing board.True fans believe in fair play and respect. They respect the other teams, their players and fans. They also respect referees and match officials.Hooliganism has no place in modern football. It leads to injury and even deaths of players, fans, referees and innocent citizens. It also leads to destruction of properties.Clubs are heavily fined if their fans participate in hooliganism.Sometimes the team may be banned from participating in tournaments if their fans participate in hooliganism.Football should be used in uniting people, not dividing people. The unruly fans better known as hooligans, have continued to hinder the growth of football. The football federation and clubs managements should openly condemn hooliganism. The law enforcers and the football fraternity should work together and eradicate hooliganism. They should ban hooligans from attending football matches. After all, hooliganism is a crime.Hooligans should be arrested and arraigned in court.Sponsors don't like to be associated with clubs whose fans are hooligans.People also fear to go to watch football matches because they fear that violence might be unleashed by the hooligans.True fans must stand up for their teams and report hooligans to the police officers.Time for hooliganism in Kenyan football is over.Hooliganism should not be allowed,it should be condemned in the strongest terms possible.Time to act is now.Let us kick hooliganism out of Kenyan football.
