In the past when we were young, it was taboo to sit down while someone older than you was standing. People used to respect the elderly in society but nowadays it is all about survival for the fittest or come first, come served. There is this time when I was in an office and there were sits outside there where the people would sit while awaiting to be served. There was this lady who seemed to be in her early 20s and she had arrived first and so she was sitting on one of those seats. Then another man came, he was really old and he looked really tired so the other people requested the lady to let the man have the seat, okay the other people were also older and when the lady was told to stand for the man to sit, she refused and told them that they should mind their own business. I felt embarrassed and I felt as though we have been a failure to the society and that we no longer value the elderly people.

In the matatus everyday, we have seen some elderly women standing or sitting next to the door while a young person is comfortably sited inside in far much better place. It is wrong to be so inconsiderate because we know that we owe our well being to the older members of society. You might assume that because you don't know them and they don't know you, you don't owe them that respect but that is a wrong perception, they are still like your parents. Assume someone else treated your mother or father like that what would you feel? Why do you go ahead and handle another person's parents with so much contempt.

At one point in time, have you thought that one day

you'll age and you'll need to be taken care of, or do you think you'll stay young and energetic forever. The education system has corrupted the minds of the young people telling them that they have equal rights with the older member. There should be social studies in our schools to train children to grow up in fear and respect. The Bible demands that children should respect their parents. Treat every person like your parent and you'll receive blessings.
