Industrial training is training whereby a student undergoes practical training in an approved industry relating to his area of study.

Most degree courses in Kenya have a mandatory industrial training when the student finishes his third year of study. However, this can vary from course to course as well as depend on the institution.

Some courses also have more than one industrial training, like for example, engineering.

Industrial training has more than enough advantages to students. These include:

1. Industrial training enables the application of the theoretical knowledge gained in class to the actual work environment.

2. It instills skills required by prospective employers.

3. Students are able to be exposed to industrial tools they will use in future.

4. Gives students a glimpse on how they will be doing their work in future. They gain some work experience during such training.

5. A lot of information is gathered since the students get to interact with professionals in his/her field.

Though industrial training brings all this advantages to students, some don't really take it seriously. They see it as just the continuation of the theoretical knowledge learned in class and end up doing it just to succeed in their examinations. Others opt to go to their relatives businesses just to get a good recommendation when at times they do not do things the way they are supposed to be done. This should not be the case however.

Industrial training goes a long way to give a student experience that he'll be able to apply in his future job. If a company accepts you for internship, and you do well in your job, don't you think they'll consider you once an opportunity arises? Even if they require experience, don't you think they'll view you as

experienced?

Industrial training also assists in sustainable economic growth. Since the use of appropriate and up to date technology is the main driver to economic development, students should learn and get to use these technologies. When they do industrial training, they get to see and know how various tools of the companies work and how they can improve on them. They are exposed to the technologies used in the various industries, which they would have not got the opportunity to at that time if the industrial training was not there.

One thing that discourages some students from going into industrial training is that some companies don't pay them. However, the experience gained from such companies is immense that it can result to direct employment once one graduates. Examples are Kenya Power and KENGEN. Students should thus not only consider payments but the quality of experience gained.

Take industrial training seriously as it is for your own benefit.
