The issue of half-baked graduates has become a concern to the society. This is because it is directly linked to the development of a nation. The problem with this kind of graduates is not only experienced locally, but globally.

Half-baked graduates have caused low productivity on the economy. They get into the job market but don't really perform. They have perfected in the art of interviews in that they convince interviewers and employers that they can do good a job. The reality of the matter is that this issue doesn't start at higher learning institutions but rather all the way from high school with the problem even starting in primary school in some individuals.
Why this? Lets ask ourselves one critical question: why is there cheating in exams cases in primary school and secondary schools? Maybe one question won't do so lets think about this other question: don't you think that these cheaters once they succeed and get to campus will just learn for the purpose of succeeding in their exams? One more question: take it they succeed, they don't really have the required expertise that they were supposed to gain, true?

What do these graduates do to be termed half-baked? First of all, they learn for the purpose of passing their exams. Yes, they will do anything to get high scores. What has made matters worse is easy access to the internet. Almost everything can be got from the internet. Lets look at how the internet brings about the issue of half baked graduates. We cannot deny the fact that the internet has brought with it numerous benefits. On the other hand, we also have to admit that it has come with some negative impacts to the society. Lets look at the negative impacts of the internet to

education and how it brings about half baked graduates.

1. Copy Pasting. This is the number one thing that dilutes education. Students have got into the habit of lifting things on the internet and submitting it as their own. Once they are given tasks such as take away CATS, assignments, projects or reports, they just search over the internet and do a little editing then submit them to the examiner. They may have succeeded in their examinations but didn't and still don't know what they did. In the end, they will have to be trained all over again when they are employed in order to ensure efficiency during work.

2. Smartphones. Not only that but phones that can access the internet. Phones have made the task of cheating in exams easier for some people. They just ensure that they subscribe to internet bundles then sit back and relax waiting for the paper to be put on their desk. They are as confident as ever knowing that all the answers will be on the palms of their hands once they take out their internet enabled phones from their pockets or wherever. They just search over the internet the question the way it is and paste the answer the way it is on the internet.

3. Success. They are sure of passing in their exams. But are they competent employees? Are they fit for the job market? That's the internet but it is not the only thing that contributes to the molding of half baked graduates.

Another thing is the issue of dwelling so much on theoretical knowledge as opposed to practicals. Practicals enables one to experience the real industrial world as opposed to just a perception. Courses such as engineering and medicine require intense practicals in order for one to be a competent professional.
Practicals can be done at school but this is not always enough. Industrial training should be taken seriously in order for the graduate to have first hand experience in the real working environment.
Besides, industrial training has lots of other benefits. If graduates are to be competent, then practical knowledge should be taught as an accompaniment to theoretical knowledge. There are lots of other factors that contribute to graduates not being competent enough in the job market. Such things as the increase need for entertainment among campus students, or the issue of students who got bad grades being admitted to courses such as engineering as privately sponsored students because they have money are what we are looking at. How then do these half baked graduates get into the job market? Well, they have perfected in the art of interviews. Again, the internet comes into place. They search for all the possible interview questions they are to expect over the internet and study them. Funny thing is that they study hard for the interview, more than they did in school. They succeed in their interviews and manage to get the job but in the end, they suffer because they don't know what to do. Some have ended up losing their jobs. Some employers have thus resorted to requiring experience in certain positions so as not to receive such kind of graduates.

How will we then solve this issue of half baked graduates? Like I always say, it all starts with you then we'll follow. Also, things such as industrial training and practical learning should be well included in the syllabus. Strict invigilation during exams should be done. What would better the quality of graduates is setting application questions in exams as opposed to just lifting the question from the handout or whatever source.
